Finally Friday

Good Morning!  There was a huge storm overnight last night, so besides the fact that I didn't sleep very well - it was still POURING outside at 4:45 am when my alarm went, instead of getting up and going to the gym or even getting up to work out at home....I hit the snooze and went back to sleep.

I did manage to go Mon, Tues and yesterday.  I had every intention of going this morning until it was pouring rain.  I know, terrible excuse, but that happened.  I'm hoping to walk over lunch today - if it isn't raining.  There is a chance of rain and storms all day.  I would like to at least get a nice walk in over lunch if possible though - the girls have a birthday party tonight right after work - so there isn't really a chance that I can squeeze a run in after work.  Tomorrow we have soccer at 9am and 3pm and the hubby is going golfing in the AM - so unless I want to get up at 6:30 (which may happen anyway) there will be no run tomorrow morning.  I definitely need to get a run in to keep on my schedule.  I don't really like running on the treadmill at the gym.  I haven't mastered a full mile on the treadmill yet.  It is too boring.  I have a much easier time running the mile outside.  My workout on the treadmill is to interval between walking and running.  Walking is both on a flat incline and intervals between 5-12.  I find that more of a challenge and much more interesting than just running solid for 30-45 minutes.  I get bored and then I just stop running.  

My goal for the weekend is to run on both Saturday and Sunday.  I'm traveling for work next week, I have a feeling it will be a lot of sandwiches for lunch and dinners out.  I'm planning to bring workout clothes and to work out both Tues & Wed morning....and then back to the gym on Thurs & Fri.

I have no new stats for this week..........weight hasn't changed at all.  I'm still a little bummed out about that fact, but I'm trying to keep positive and not give up on this journey.  Have a great weekend - and Happy Summer Solstice Day!  The longest day of the year!

Shoe Shopping

I love SHOES!  I will clarify a bit.....I love HIGH HEEL shoes.  Like, very tall, high heeled, platform, as high as I can possibly wear and still walk in (sometimes comfortably, sometimes not so much) SHOES!  I am only 5 ft, 3in tall so I am always in high-heel shoes.  I have been wearing high-heeled shoes for as long as I can remember.  Once my mom bought me my first pair of pumps I was hooked on heels.  Many of my wo-workers and friends are always shocked when I wear flat shoes and stand by them (now, this only happens only into/out of work - so I don't ruin my shoes).  People notice when you are always in 3-4 inch heels, if you suddenly switch to flats.  I even wore heels all through my pregnancies - although toward the end of both pregnancies I was in shorter 2-inch heels.  I am just not comfortable in flats.  Most flat shoes actually hurt my feet.

But, now I have a dilemma.  Next week I'm going on a trip for work which will require that I wear closed-toe and flat shoes to walk around distribution center/buildings for 3 days.  I have no idea how to shop for flats.  I have tried on flats in the past, but I have never been excited to buy any.  My only real "flat" shoes are flip-flops and tennis shoes, neither are appropriate for this work trip.  So, a shoe shopping adventure awaits.........

I didn't want to spend a lot of money on these shoes (because I will likely only wear them for three days next week and then maybe not ever again) I decided to check out the flats at Target.  I tried on about 6 pair of flats.  Most of them were not very comfortable - keeping in mind that I will be walking and standing for a lot of the time those 3 days.

I ended up with these shoes:

They were only $24.99 - and more comfortable than some of the lower priced shoes.  I did decide to go up 1/2 a size and I also bought some pads for the back of shoe/heel to help prevent blisters.  I'm going to try to wear them around the house at home the next few days and this weekend to help break them in before the trip on Monday.  I'll report back after my trip to see how the flat shoe adventure goes.

Weekend Recap

My hubby and I both took Friday off so that we could take the girls to the water park by our house.  I had a quick appointment in the morning and then stopped at Starbucks for my favorite skim vanilla latte.  Once I got back home, I figured I should try to get in some sort of workout or run before we took off for the day.  I laced up my shoes and hit the road.  It was pretty humid, but luckily not too hot yet, at 10am.  Since this was my 4th run on the trail by my house - I have figured out a route that is just about equal to 5k.   I noticed a few minutes into my run that it seemed a little harder than my past run.  Probably because it had been 6 days since my last run. I have to try to not wait so long in between running.

I ran the first mile and then decided to walk/run the 2nd and 3rd miles.  It was pretty muggy and I realized after mile 1 that I probably should have had a little more water before I ran, instead of my delicious latte.  Nonetheless, I kept going.  The first mile was my fastest.  I walked and ran both the 2nd and 3rd mile.  Overall, I ran my farthest on this run - and my fastest mile was 12:10.  I didn't walk quite as much as the last time, and I ended up finishing in 38.14 minutes (3 minutes faster than my previous best time).  I still do not love running, but I think overall it seems to be getting a little bit better and I'm making progress.  My goal is still to run the entire 3.1 miles and to get under 35 minutes.  Overall, I'm happy with my results so far and the progress I've made in a pretty short time.  I'm hoping I'll meet my goals before my event in Sept.

Friday night, we had tickets to The Twins game.  It was a pretty nice evening for baseball, although the game didn't go in our favor.  Saturday morning, I was going to go to a class at the gym, but since my sister had to work and couldn't go with me, I decided to bail.  Sometimes I need an accountability partner.  I wanted to do something outside before my husband left to golf.  So, I ran/walked my 5k route - with a slight variation.  I decided to walk my 1/5 mile route and to try to run 1.5 miles home.  I ended up doing a combo walk/run home.  Not a huge success, but at least I did run a little.  I didn't track it with my nike app, because I was walking so much of the route.  

Once I got home, I decided to water plants and pull weeds.  That will likely be my entire summer weekend routine.  The weeds are never-ending in our yard.  It rained for most of the day after that.  The girls & I went grocery shopping and my hubby came home early from golf (since they also got rained out).  We watched the Movie "This is 40" and had adult beverages.  I know, we are a little late to the party.  I still thought it was hilarious.  It definitely paralleled a lot of our life.  I could relate on so many levels.  

Sunday was Father's Day.  I overslept, so I didn't make it to the gym for my 8:15 body pump class.  Instead, I made French Toast, sausage and fruit salad for the family to celebrate Father's Day.  It was a pretty nice day out, so we decided to hit up the water park again.  We have season passes which is so nice, because we can just run over there for a few hours whenever we have time and it is nice out.  When we got home I made a chocolate mousse pie for the hubby.  He loves chocolate dessert, so he gets that on Father's Day.  I forgot to take a picture of it so I'll do that another time and post the recipe.  We also had ribeye steaks on the grill, roasted potatoes and salad.  Yum.  I was so full after dinner I could hardly eat my dessert......but I managed a little later.

It was a great weekend!  Not too much going on (which is rare in the summer) and we spent some quality family time together.  I hope you had a great weekend too.

Chocolate Nutella Cake

I watched an episode of Pioneer Woman the other morning, and my little one asked me to make this cake for dessert.  I didn't have time to make it from scratch, so I compromised and used a boxed cake mix instead.

When I bake, if I use a box cake mix instead of making a recipe from scratch, I tend to substitute ingredients.  So my recipe doesn't follow the directions on the box, but feel free to use the box instructions if you would prefer.  My substitutions will give the cake more calories, but is so delicious!  

1 box chocolate cake mix
1 cup melted butter
1 cup of milk
3 eggs
Nutella (about 1/2 cup divided for 2 cakes)
Strawberries sliced
Whipped Cream

Mix cake mix, butter, milk and eggs together.  Divide into 2 round cake pans.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes.  Let the cakes cool completely.

Remove cake from pan and spread the nutella on the first layer of cake.  Place the second layer of cake on top of the first.  Spread remaining nutella on the top of the cake - and down the sides if you want to use more nutella......I only frosted the top.  Place the sliced strawberries on top for decoration (and to get some fruit in your day!)

Serve with whipped cream.

I realized after I made this that I ended up using too much milk (oops).....which is why I think it was a bit short.....but it was still yummy.  I'm sure my nutella loving girls will want this cake again!

Second Run Down

My last post recapped that I finally ran my first mile.  I know that doesn't seem like a monumental feat to most people, but I haven't been able to do it.  I hate running.  Honestly, I'm not sure that I will really ever enjoy it - but I'm trying.  I decided that if I'm going to give this a try though, that I need to have some sort of goal.  I stepped out of my comfort zone and agreed to run a 5k with my friends.  I've never run a 5k.  I know it isn't a "far" run.....but for someone who doesn't even like running - it is a huge step.  I would like to be able to run the entire 5k, so I'm not super embarrassed running with my friends.  Which means, it is time to kick it into gear!  The event is at the end of Sept so I have some time to "train" but I want to be ready to go by that date.  I'm also trying to decide if I should run in one event before this one (without friends on my own).  I'm undecided as of today, but this is my first official 5k event:

So, I ran my very first mile (without stopping to walk) on Thursday last week.  I was so proud of myself, but what next?  Well, now I would like to get to a point where I can run the entire 3 miles without stopping to walk.  Baby Steps.  I made the mistake of trying to run again on Friday morning at the gym on the treadmill.  It was probably too soon for me to try that since I had just run the evening before.  I didn't make it for the 1 mile without walking a little.  I ended up walking/running 2 miles instead.  I mix up my walking/running on the treadmill with speed and incline, just so I don't get bored.  I did manage to get out again on Saturday morning, and I ran 1-mile straight again, and I ran it just a little bit faster than Thursday :)  12:02 vs. 13:35 on Thursday.  Baby steps!!!! Once I made that first mile on Saturday morning - I did end up walking more than running for mile 2.  But, then I tried to run most of mile 3 home.  I was just so happy that I managed to run the first mile again!!!!  Twice now - Success!!

I started the couch to 5k app last year - I made it to about week 5 and then I quit.  I don't really like running (yet??? I'm hoping that eventually I like it at least a little more).  I started using the app again a few months ago on and off....and I'm back to week 5.  I am also running in a 5k (my first) at the end of July - so I decided I better kick it into gear, so I don't embarrass myself running with my friends.  Well, in all of this on-and-off running, I've never run a full mile non-stop.....until today.  I finally did it.  I'm not sure why it took me so long to get to this point, but I'm really proud of myself!  It wasn't a fast mile - but, it was my first and I was so happy that I didn't stop once.  In fact, because I'm running in this 5k next month, I kept on running (and some walking) until I completed 3 miles.  I logged those 3 miles in 41 minutes.  Not fast, but I'll take it.  My second mile was actually my "best" at 13 minutes and 35 seconds.  My goal for my 5k time in July is 35 minutes.  I'm hoping that I can keep on running and shave those 6 minutes off of my current time ---- and quite honestly I would LOVE if I could run the entire thing without stopping (which should probably really be my first goal).

I have also started (re-started, whatever) a 30-day challenge.  2 shakes per day plus one 400-600 calorie meal, 2-3 snacks and lots and LOTS of water each day, I'm going to do a cleanse on Sunday - and then depending on how that goes, I'll be trying a back-to-back Sunday/Monday cleanse days next week.  Fingers crossed!

I took pictures of myself today - so I have something to compare it to in 30-days.  It wasn't pretty.  I took the pictures right before I ran (guessing that was my own subconscious pushing me to complete the 3 miles). I'll post the pictures in 30-days, with hopefully some telling results. 

My weigh-in day is coming up tomorrow - and my goal for next week is to link up with Skinny Meg for Workout Wednesday.
